Ben starts the broadcast by noting that it's just him- no Hector. Going to read emails, no special announcements. 4th of July was fun- he has some pictures.
H Lee asks- for breeding, some offspring make no sense. How does a mouse give birth to cats? This seems to be a question that comes up every now and again amongst newer players when they first have pets give birth. The pregnancy system is weird because none of the pets in the game are real creatures. I didn't want it to be so restrictive that each pet would only give birth to one kind- I didn't want it so cats would only give birth to cats and desikhs would only give birth to desikhs. So I have given instead all of the pet graphics a list of traits that graphic has: how many legs or arms, is it multicolored or single colored, does it have ears, are they long or short, that sort of thing. And then it picks offspring based on those attributes. So a green cat, for example, would have four legs, ears, and a long tail, and a mouse also has four legs and ears and a tail and it's a furry animal; it looks at whether it's a furry animal or has scales or whatnot... Fishes are obviously scaled... it looks at that sorts of attributes. So in terms of those sorts of things a mouse and a cat are extremely similar, and so you can have mice give birth to cats and vice versa, and they can give birth to dogs and I'm sure dogs can give birth to them. There isn't a fixed list; some people wanted me to tell them what pets gave birth to what, what the possiblities are, and I couldn't tell you. I didn't actually make the list- I just have this list of attributes and the game has this formula for weighting them. I like that, that the game has invented you know this sort of content but anyway so that's why that happens. Let's look at another one.
Ibeta- Will I ever make a green sootie? I have been stubborn about making a green sootie because I didn't make a green sootie to begin with, I made a black sootie, and then when I made colors I made a bunch of different ones and I didn't have a green sootie, for no particular reason. … And then people were saying, you should make a green sootie, when they noticed that one wasn't there. And I kind of had this thought like, well, I don't know, that's what I initially did, and I kind of like … it's a quirk of the game: apprently in the psypets world there is no green sootie. And so for that sort of reason I've been thinking let's not have a green sootie. Let's say there's no such thing as a green sootie for whatever reason it introduces a fact about the game world, but I don't think anyone sees it that way. No one says, oh well I guess sooties don't have green babies, they say, why hasn't been implemented a green sootie. So maybe I should just make a green sootie. But that was my reason for not doing it in the first place, I liked it kind of as an odd thing. It was an accident purely, but I thought, well that's fine, we can just say that that's how sooties are, but people don't accept it so maybe I should just make the green sootie so that people can be happy. So but then the problem is that people are going to say that about every other graphic, they're going to say, why didn't you make a pink whatever or a red this or a green that I mean I don't want to do all the colors for all the pets it's just too many and it seems like there should just be different varieties. There are no green sooties, could be a fact, and there are no purple desikhs could be another so I don't know. It is interesting and the green sootie comes up a lot, and yet things like purple desikhs never do. Maybe that's just cause sooties are much more popluar than desikhs but anyway I don't really know what I'll do; I don't know if we're going to add a green sootie or not but that was my reasoning anyway in any event. So let's go on to the next mail
Rika- the tabs for the shrine and apiary are a little weird. The background of the tabs doesn't turn white and the fonts aren't bolded. Ok so for whatever reason it's not recognizing it as the active tab, and I can fix that. I'm sure I know what the problem is. I would be interested to know if the tabs for different rooms are being bold and white like you visit the shrine is it highlighting the basement tab or something like that, you know, one of the other addons. So anyway, it doesn't really matter it's probably a typo or I probably copied the page from some other house addon and I didn't tell it you're you're this other page so use this other tab so lemme write this down that that's happening because that's such an easy fix. So shrine and apiary... tabs on shrine and apiary pages are not correctly highlighted. Let's see what else we've got here.
Rika also asks- whatever happened to the high contrast display themes did people stop using it or did you remove it or was it removed to make room for another theme. It was not removed to make room for another theme I mean there's no limit I could have a million themes or whatever. The reason ti was removed was when I did the layout change the high contrast theme was the only one... it didn't just change the color it changed the layout a bit it changed the thickness of some borders and did a lot of very specific to the page layout sort of changes so the previous layout I thought was great we had the wide and the thin version it no longer worked for that it required a lot of changes to make ti work so I said fine I'll deal with it later and never did it again. And I don't know if people particularly missed it I wonder how many people were using it in the past but it is something I should, you know, It was there before and I had the code so I should make the changes. So that's why I just stopped using it; it required a lot more changes to adapt from the old layout of psypets to the new layout. And not everyone was even around when that was being used, so anyway...
Rika- deck of many things. It's already bad enough that it sometimes vanishes after the first use; no need to make it game sellable too. I bought items with a game favor; it shouldn't be game sellable. I did actually recently make it non game-sellable; somebody psymailed me and told me that they had accidentally gamesold theirs and the reason it was gamesellable is because the item is a standard availabliity item nad you can get it in the game- it happens to be exceedingly rare, but you can obtain them; you don't have to pay to get them- they're available in the game through normal sorts of means. But despite being normal they are very extreme, and I agree that they should not be game sellable. So I've made it no longer game sellable so that's been fixed.
[Someone who's name I can't understand, sorry...]- Could you please add mushrooms to the hungry sidewalk rewards or give us another way to get mushrooms now that aging roots and logs aren't available through the greenhouse. Interesting. And I don't think it was [whoever] but someone else psymailed me because their hungry sidewalk was asking for a meat lovers supreme pizza or something the point was it required mushrooms. And they were saying that's kind of ridiculous and expensive to get the ingredients to make the pizza and that's the bad news. The good news is that the value of pizza is very high because of that. Mushrooms are worth a lot because they are based on the value of logs and aging roots and those are worth a lot, and the reason I'm mentioning all of this is because it is that value that... oh no! Ok so actually I was thinking about this the wrong way. The value of most items is based on the food hours of the item. For example a lemme get this right a redsberry is worth moneys based on how many food hours it gives. However, some items are given value based on materials based on the recycling sort of value. Like blueberries have a value based on blue dye. So here's the weird thing. Most food items have values based on the food hours, and for the hungry sidewalk it's the food hours that the pigeons reward you for if you feed them something that is more filling... You'll get more progress on the hungry sidewalk when you give them more food hours. With mushrooms, it's not the food hours that the value is based on, it's the value of the aging root and the logs. Because of that, things that include mushrooms like the supreme pizzas, their value is based on the items, not the food value, so they're worth a lot more than they actually give you food. And that's bad because the sidewalk only cares about food hours. So I hope that all made sense. I was going to say initially that it's ok that they're worth a lot if the hungry sidewalk asks for it because it'll be worth more for the progress bars but that's not true, it won't be worth as much as the money you put in, because logs and aging roots are wroth a lot. Anyway, here's a point regardless- I feel like having the hungry sidewalk where the pigeons ask for some of these higher value items, even if the values didn't match up, it's still really obnoxious for them to ask for an expensive item. I mean they are supposed to be a little annoying; you should go out of your way a little bit to get the items for the pigeons. Like if they ask for a pumpkin pie, I don't feel so bad about them asking for that. When they're asking for something with a lot of steps like the pizza that's really a huge pain where you have to get these things and you have to have things to make other things and you have to do all these things three levels down and it's a huge ordeal so that's kind of unfortunate. If I could think of a better rule for how the pigeons selected items that would be cool, but there isn't really a good way to have a rule of if there's only one prepare step involved or something like that and even if we had that it would still include things like special sauce which includes mushrooms, so that would be tricky there. And also another problem with a rule like that because some items you can find already prepared and so that doesn't work. I'm going to have to think of more rules for that hungry sidewalk. I will think about ways to make that a little more reasonable. One approach is to base it off of the number of items in the game. And that might be good for the moat but it might not necessarily be good for the hungry sidewalk because just because there aren't that many red jellies in the game, that doesn't mean they shouldn't ask for red jellies because they're easy to make from redsberries. It may be that I may need to go through all the recipes and just mark the ones that it's ok for the game to ask for. It might be that there's just not a good formula for picking them out. I'll think about that more and sorry about that confusion in my explanation and everything else.
Kiren11- I don't know how to earn money or get allowance. If you go to the bank you can ask the NPC there about allowance- “ask about how to make money”. It would be easier to ask her than to have me talk about it, especially to lots of people who already know.
The Shadow Knight- can there be an item that gives the American flag avatar for the forth of July? I would like to add all the flags, but at the same time I'm not going to sit down and do 20 of them a day. And some of them are very hard to work with the curving overlapping display that I've given flags. I don't know why I didn't think of American Flag myself. Maybe I'll do something retroactively for fourth of Julys to come, but for all of you that were here for this fourth maybe I'll just give you the item since I didn't have any sort of event preplanned. Let me write that down; that's so obvious.
Hara- awesome things fish plus sharp edge to get a Sole Calibur- we already have a dull calibur in the game. Wants a way to get pitiless peach, jar of weaponized marmalade, so we've got a lot of weird ideas here. Kumquatermelons, epic flail, so we have a lot of ideas here and I'll copy them down for consideration, but I won't make any guarantees.
Gui- Please please remove teleporters as an option from the alchemist potion shop. It would also be nice to be able to type a quantity like you can in the alchemist general shop. I'm aware [of the quantities] and I'm going to be changing those [for all NPC exchanges]. As for removing teleporters, I haven't done it in such a long time because I don't like teleporters. I should probably remove that exchange. I'll make a note of that.
[Kiren11?] has more questions that can be addressed from the Q&A section of the forum; please look at those areas before asking questions here.
Lenneth asks- is it possible for there to be some sort of storage facilities that you have to pay a certain quantity every month that is not in your home but elsewhere. That was kind of the idea with storage to begin with. Storage is considered a separate section of town. It's started to become less and less removed, as you do exchanges/arrange your shop from storage. Maybe we could do something even more removed. Rather than a monthly fee, I'd probably do an access fee, where it costs something to add or remove an item. Or maybe even to view it all costs something. That just came to mind, I don't know why, but to be different from the storage unit. Every month is silly because you could just remove all your stuff before the end of the month. And why not pay daily? Otherwise you might pay for space you don't use... I really think daily charges like those in the current storage are the fairest. And transaction-based might be even more fair in that respect. I don't know. I should give this more thought. I don't know what we'd call it... deep storage? (laughs) The other thing I'm wondering is why... why would you need it? I just wonder what people are doing with these items; like not getting rid of them because possibly in the future you might need hundreds of these items? I don't know why people are holding on to so many items. I guess it's just you have so much money and you don't have any other use for them so you save them because you might need them in the future. I really feel like it needs to become easier to go through items or sell them. But this is only one person; maybe Lenneth is the only one who needs this kind of storage, or maybe not.
[someone whose name I didn't catch] – I think the gamesell price for certain items is still too high, like gaudy chair. There are plenty of items where the highest seller's market bid is way lower than the gamesell price so people don't have an incentive to sell to the seller's market. The value of items is decreasing slowly over time. The game sends me a mail every day, and the inflation factor is dropping. And that is almost as concerning as increasing except that I think it's been increasing for too long. If it keeps dropping, I'm going to keep an eye on it. It should get to a point where it sort of slows down and bounces around. Anyway sellback values are decreasing for things like pyrestone and tin. We should wait and see. But I don't want to react- I want to see how that plays out before I do anything else. But I am addressing small changes to certain items, like exchanges for taffies for potatoes to wood, which is mainly a response for the lack of the greenhouse. With tin I think it was a problem where tin used to be so common people were trying to get rid of it, so I stopped adding ways for tin to come in and started adding ways for things like gold or silver, and the roles are reversed. I might reexamine the drop rates.
Shadow Knight- I don't get a city hall notification when someone changes their name. Can you fix this? This is upsetting. It should be fixed. What did PersonDX change their name to? Miteothi? (stumbles over it) You're going to have to send me the pronunciation in a psymail some day.
Oh look! Miteothi sends a psymail. He says: where is that game where psypets has a competition where it restarts every month? Oh, from so long ago. I don't know where that is. I really don't know what to say to that.
Daednu Nam (stumbles over it)- I'm experimenting with different types of recipes and I realize that we have numerous uses for potatoes but we don't have types of spaghetti. Could you add some Italian food for more uses for our pasta? I think people have wanted pasta uses for some time. I'm always up for adding more recipes, it's just a matter of when I get the inspiration or feeling. I know that we need more uses for pasta.
Miteothi- Implement broken glass like blueberries- pets can craft blueberries into blue dye and therefore pets can craft broken glass into glass? I guess... um... here's something about blue dye for example. Broken glass recycles into glass. It does so at a 2/3 rate to get back the materials. I feel like they would have to combine two broken glasses to get a glass? But then you would have to have 1 and 1/3 glass there and you've only got one glass. Whereas blueberries one blueberry equals one blue dye, but one broken glass does not equal one glass. But I suppose the point of pet power is to improve on things you have in your house. The only other problem with that is there have been occasional complaints with pets that want to craft batwing items. Because batwing was something that was only available through a monthly, as is broken glass. And that's frustrating for people whose pets want to make one and they can't acquire one. And I'd like to avoid making that problem happen again. It's an interesting idea, but that is confusing people and I don't want it to be a common thing where people's pets want to craft things that they have to pay five dollars for. Other than that it's not a bad idea. But I think really more for the reason that the errors, not the errors, but the progress reports that say the pet can't make it. I don't want that.
Any chance we could get foxes fixed? The graphic is currently coming up on some pages as being resized, because it's not 48x48. That's pretty interesting. Here's something I've noticed about the fox graphic- it looks a little blurry. But if you look at the properties, it says 48. Oh wait, no, it says 46x48. Let me look at this. View image... I mean it is just a blurrier graphic, it doesn't have the same sharpness that some others have, but it does seem to be two pixels thinner, and that's just going to make the problem worse. Um, I can fix that... Huh. Ok. I'll fix that, that's a minor thing. I may go over them in black too to make them a little more clear.
Empty can is acting like the cell phone from the hungry sidewalk- the progress keeps going back and forth. I noticed I did that exact same thing I did for the cell phone. It's been fixed for the empty can now. I also saw someone reporting that it still doesn't work for the cell phone and I'm going to go check my sidewalk but it should work now. Cell phones are working now. I'm sorry there're so many problems with this hungry sidewalk, it's proving to be a lot more involved than I expected.
Rob1959- please please please fix the hungry sidewalk.
BallatoRocks- why not add a meat lover's supreme pizza to the list of pizzas you can order on the telephone? This might also be a thing with the pigeons asking for meat lovers. I don't want all the pizzas orderable over the telephone. It should be something that people do. I'm not gonna add more pizzas. I may make an Asian type restaurant that gives you various Asian dishes. I may make the pizza thing a little more general so it adds a few more items, but only a few. Preparing food is something you're supposed to do.
Miteothi also says- newborn siblings link it doesn't show. I'll look at that thread and keep a note of it but don't want to read over it now.
Daednu Nam (stumbles again)- can you introduce rooms in your storage like you do in the house? This would really help people find items in storage. Storage... I can do it... I'd like to do it like I did the house. It's just not as easy as the house which is why I haven't done it, and it could lighten the load on your server potentially. Also says the basement isn't working right? A house that is, say, 900/1000 remains that way when an item is placed in the basement. Is that still true? That's an old bug. The problem is when it shows you your current house size it's not actually counting it every time. Moving things between basement and house should trigger a recount but it apparently is still not. I thought that I fixed this before.
Lenneth says- I [something] my rooms are disorderly. In the end maybe I will need them later. I had another question but I forgot. She's saying she wants that other storage thing because her rooms are disorderly.
Shadow Knight says- Crystal balls are still on the old old PVP system. They tell you how many sigils someone else has. I guess what I really need to do with those is remove entirely their action. I used to find it amusing that it was giving people useless information about other people, but it breaks your crystal ball too, as I recall, so I should just get rid of it.
Lenneth says, ah yeah, can we have some more public trading. You know, for two deeds instead of one. People have been requesting this for awhile and at first I was saying no because I thought people were going to be doing multiple different items. It would be hard to list them and hard to sort. But if it's just a quantity thing, like multiples, I guess that's probably ok. It's just something I forgot about. That's actually a great thing to do to get more player to player trading to happen,.
Heckley- posting a link to the broadcast page on late broadcast days would be nice. The broadcasting time notifications are hardwired into the game, so I could change it, but it seems easier to just have a psymail on the rare occasions that we have an off-normal broadcast.
Miteothi- Is the seller's market supposed to show the bids lower than sellback? I changed that. It used to not, but I changed it when I was considering making sellback really low, and I haven't put it back yet. I will put that back in.
