What causes equipment to break?
Every time a pet does something with that equipment (once every hour), the equipment's durability is reduced until it finally breaks. Broken equipment become Ruins and remain wielded by the pet.
Adventuring takes the most toll on equipment, then hunting, then gathering, while crafting and inventing have lower chances of breaking equipment.
How close is my equipment to breaking?
When you hover your cursor over the equipment wielded by a pet, you will see a pop-up box like so :
Item Name Type Condition Comment
Under Condition, there are four possible entries, from best to worst namely :
Brand new
New
Used
Worn
If your equipment is worn, it is time to start looking for a replacement, just in case.
How can I tell which equipment has higher durability?
In general, weapons that are costly, rare, made of magical or divine items (like Pyrestone or Gossamer, Large Giamond and even Small Giamond) will break far less than other items made of Plastic or Wood. Custom items and donator's gifts like the Tooth of Ramoth will never break. The difference is because of their durability values.
To see how durable is a piece of equipment, look up its entry in the Encyclopaedia. Under Durability, the possible entries are, in decreasing durability :
Indestructible
Legendary
High magic
Hypertech/Magic
Metal-like
Wood-like
Cardboard-like
Paper-like
Smoke-like
Obviously, Smoke-like items tend to go very fast.
Repairing Broken Equipment
Just visit The Smithery with your New, Used or Worn equipment and some Duct Tape in the Storage. Click on the Repair tab and pick the item you wish to repair and make the payment. Repairs can only be done if you have Duct Tape in your storage. It costs 1 Duct Tape per item repaired.
If your equipment has already become a Ruins, it is no longer repairable.
Tip: If an item costs less than the price of duct tape in the market square, just buy new equipment and sort through the ruins for quick supplies. This not only saves money but you get free supplies out of the deal!
History
- To stabilise the economy and increase demand for equipment, it was suggested that equipment be made breakable over time.
- On 20 May 2006, That Guy Ben fixed the item durability code so that all equipable items (save custom items) have a random chance of being broken.
- Code is tweaked so that perfectionist pets are less likely to break equipment.
- Chaos ensues as residents discover massive amounts of breakage of their equipment.
- That Guy Ben further tweaks the code :
- so everyone agrees, items are rampantly breaking.
- so instead I'm doing it by item durability... which probably makes more sense, and makes people happier anyway since they can see when an item is going to break, rather than it happening randomly.
- at a later time, the smith will be able to repair items.
- a note: as it is now, you can put stuff in the market square, where all personalized-type attributes about it are removed, including it's current condition, then take it out, and *poof* fixed.
- the market square will be eventually be updated to automatically charge a repairing price for all damaged items you're selling. you'll be notified of that price on the confirmation page, so you can back out if you want to.
- Magic Fixer Guy is introduced to fix broken equipment temporarily.
- On 4 April 2006, Magic Fixer Guy is removed from the game.
- On 5 April 2006, The Smithery is tweaked to allow equipment to be repaired there, for a fee.
- May 2008, the Smithery is updated so now you need Duct Tape to fix equipment.
